Leucate Kiteboarding Grand Slam - Day Six Featured

With day six came the rain. Not very much happened, some riders waited around the event site, others stayed in the comfort of their accommodation in the knowledge that no wind was likely to materialize.

Friday is the very last chance to finish the competition before prize giving. Right now the forecast isn’t looking too great, but with only a little over an hour needed to finish the competition there’s still a chance it may happen. Lets hope for some wind on the final day !

Leucate Kiteboarding Grand Slam - Day Four and Five Featured

Day four turned out to be a lay day.

2016mdv13

With very little chance for wind the riders had a late skippers meeting at ten o'clock after a long competition day yesterday. This gave many riders a chance to rest and check out the surrounding areas. Some riders rode at cable parks in the vicinity, whilst others had a more leisurely day perusing the golf course.

For the French team it was just another day, training hard and getting ready for the next competition. These guys have a solid team even with their own coaches; it's great to see a team with such commitment to the sport!

The forecast for day five looked like a decent chance for wind. With an unusual cross onshore direction predicted it will be interesting to see how the top guys and girls can handle these uncharacteristically French conditions!

Day five started with the usual riders briefing at 10am, and the draw for the Big Air Main Event shoudl conditions permit. Unfortunately the day only turned out into variable conditions stretching over the entire space of the day.

2016mdv18

Every hour or so the wind picked up and then slowly backed off again. The forecast called for more wind near the end of day so the competition was put on a waiting pattern at the beach.

Kites were rigged, most riders waited, whilst others took it in turns to determine for themselves that indeed there wasn't really enough wind.

After the forecasted afternoon kick never showed it's face the competition was called for the day and riders could go home to relax after a cold day at the beach.

Right now tomorrows forecast doesn't look too promising, but riders and staff will be giving mother nature the best opportunity she can to grace the shores with her breath once again. #prayforwind

Leucate Kiteboarding Grand Slam - Day Three Featured

Day three kicked off with a false start, both riders and crew were down the beach before sunrise only to find the conditions weren’t as per the forecast. There was practically no wind, although locals reassured everyone it would pick up some still remained skeptic. By ten o’clock however the wind did pick up and things got underway at ten forty five. There was lots of ground to cover, with a pretty terrible looking forecast for the rest of the week, the plan was to get as much finished today as possible. Riders and crew spent until eight o’clock on the beach in one of the longest days on tour record!

2016mdv9

Round one saw the first stacked heat of the day with the returning Whaley up against Neto and Spiessberger. Any doubts about Whaleys fitness were quickly put aside as Whaley dealt out a technically solid heat with one of the largest Crowmobe 540s of the day, sending him straight to the third round.

On the Womens side newcomer and local rider Valesa had a difficult round one match up with Novotna. Valesa was going big and riding powered however Novotna had the experience in this situation and took her out with a nice Heart Attack at the end of the heat.

Round two saw the Garat brothers and local Frenchman winning both of their heats respectively. First it was Seb Garat coming through with a consistent heat to take out Van De Kop and a couple of heats later it was be Val Garat using the very same tactic to take out Corniel. It’s obvious when you see these two ride that they are brothers and train quite a lot together. It’s great to see two brothers competing at such a high level and sharing the same passion.

Tour rookie Coccoluto had a great run through the trials and was only narrowly defeated in his round two match up against veteran Spiessberger. No doubt we will see more of him in the future.

On the Womens side it was Coccolutos girlfriend Bagnoli narrowly getting the upperhand on Taabbel. Whilst Vieira only just took out the local Jaubert with a nice 313 on the buzzer.

2016mdv10

Round Three saw some equally tight matchups, it seemed as though no heat today wasn’t down to the wire! Zoon took out Cloetens whilst Pastor had one of the heats of the day against Garat S with one of the best KGB5s and Double Heart Attacks seen this comp so far. Hadlow had a rough heat losing against Tonijuan, whilst Mario only narrowly defeated Spiessberger by less than a single point.

For the Women round three saw what could be argued as the best heat of the competition between Kajiya and Vieira. Both girls were giving it everything they had, having almost the exact same tricks landing big Front Mobes and Backmobes to finish. Kajiya eventually taking out Vieira.

Round four saw Cloetens, Smith, Hadlow and Spiessberger all progress respectively in what were probably the most challenging conditions of the day. Very shifty winds and a large chop made it a struggle for all and depending on who landed their tricks most of these heats could have gone either way.

Round four for the women was the last round for the day and the last chance to progress into the finals. Local French rider Valesa rode a solid heat against Bagnoli, using her power to her advantage and deservedly earning a spot in the finals. Vieira once again had what could be considered the hardest heat with both herself and Whitely fighting for a place. Both girls went big having what would was considered the second best heat of the day (after Vieiras previous match up against Kajiya). It would be Whitely who would narrowly tip out Vieira in the end though taking a spot in the finals.

Round five was the last round for the men and what could be considered as the most important round. Round five is the super round where three men compete in each heat for only one spot into the final rounds. To say the heats in this round were stacked would be an understatement!

In the first heat it was Zoon vs Martinez and Smith, Zoon however totally crushed this heat, landing huge backside and frontside 317s showing that he’s going to be hard to beat in the finals.

Pastor had a similar heat to Zoon, coming calm and collected against both Serin and Cloetens. Pastor landed a Backside 315 and a KGB 540 to seal his ticket forwards.

Heat three saw Spiessberger have a great heat over Tonijuan and Racca. Usually Spiessberger doesn’t have his best results here in France so it no doubt meant a lot to him to see his way into the finals here this time.

The fourth heat was by far the most interesting however and no doubt the most stacked. Three world champs all in one heat, Whaley, Mario and Hadlow all pushing it as hard as they could to get to the finals. The draw ended up like this due to Hadlows losses early on and Whaleys absence from the first event of the year, these things are impossible to predict but they sure make for interesting viewing! It seemed as though Hadlow never really got off to the solid start he had hoped for, stringing together some good tricks but falling behind both Whaley and Mario throughout the heat. It was Whaley who came out strongest with a massive grabbed Front Blind Mobe to start the heat which really impressed the judges. Whaleys consistency throughout the heat made it seem like he would be the one to advance. Mario didn’t get off to the best start but he was still in the game, landing some solid tricks but not the kind of stuff he is usually known for. Mario and Whaley were super tight right up until the last seconds of the heat when Mario produced a Massive Nose Grabbed Backmobe 540 narrowly putting him in front of Whaley and sending him off to the finals!

The forecast for tomorrow isn’t looking good, but with some better days forecasted later in the week make sure you tune in to catch all the results from the finals!

Leucate Kiteboarding Grand Slam - Day Two Featured

Day two started with a slouch, the forecast had called for morning wind but the reality was an unusually still morning. Riders were at the beach at nine o’clock regardless and ready for action. By eleven the wind had came up and the trials began. Many riders were interested in how the young Corniel brother would perform, sadly Adeuri narrowly missed out on a place in the main event but showed he will no doubt be a force to be reckoned with in the future, producing the highest scoring trick of the trials (Backside 317). If it were any conciliation his loss was to the stand out rider of the men’s trials event Coccoluto. Coccoluto also surprised the judges with his repertoire, he has obviously been training hard for this event and should be a good rider to watch enter the main draw.

2016mdv4

This event also saw the return of Liam Whaley, who un-surprisingly made it through to the main event without breaking a sweat. Whaley had been suffering an injury that prevented him from competing at the last event in Egypt, so it will be interesting to see how his form really is in the main event tomorrow.

2016mdv5

On the French side of things countrymen and fellow brothers the Garats both made it through the trials and into the main event. Seb will no doubt be happy with this result as he tried hard in Egypt to make it through but narrowly missed out on a spot. Let’s see if the Frenchman can bring home a podium spot for their country!

2016mdv6

On the Women’s side of the trials the young Brazilian phenome Mika Sol narrowly missed out on a spot in the main event but showed she will also no doubt be one of the tours future stars. It was also the Women’s trials standout Bagnoli that unfortunately took young Sol out. Bagnoli has been slowly improving with each tour stop and it will be interesting to see how she goes up against the top seeded women this event.

2016mdv7

Once the trials were over the main event started at roughly two o’clock in unusual Mondial Du Vent conditions. It’s rare to have such light wind at the event with most riders expecting to be overpowered on their smallest kites. The wind didn’t pick up at all and the conditions were mainly for 13-14m kites for the first heat of the main event in which Youri Zoon came through with the win. The following heat was quickly abandoned due to too little wind and will be resumed first thing tomorrow.

2016mdv8

Tomorrows forecast doesn’t look special, but with a chance for the best possible conditions early on all riders have been notified of a Seven o’clock possible start which means an early night for both riders, fans and staff a like!

Leucate Kiteboarding Grand Slam - Day One Featured

The first day of the Mondial Du Vent saw a total of 60 riders from 19 different countries gathered for the opening ceremony in celebration of competing in one of the worlds longest running Kiteboarding events. Mondial Du Vent is literally the “festival of the wind”, every year promoting Kiteboarding as it’s main event, front and center.

Even though there was little chance for wind today the tension between the athletes was high. With a return to competition for Liam Whaley and rumors circulating about Adeuri Corniel (Ariel Corniels younger brother) riding at a very high level, it’s clear that this competition will be exciting for both the spectators and top seeded men alike.

On the Womens side of the draw there was a noticeable absence of Karolina Winkowska (last events winner), which surprised a few riders, there was however the addition of a few riders not present at the last event. Dioneia Vieira, Francesca Bagnoli, Mika Sol are three such Women and they will no doubt push hard to fill the gap left by Winkowska and give the already top seeded women something to fight for. Mika Sol from Brazil is competing in her very first championship event, with a strong presence in recent Junior events it will be interesting to see what this rising star can do.

2016mdv2

Tomorrows forecast looks enticing with a chance of wind from early on the riders will have a skippers meeting at nine o’clock sharp. We wish all the riders the best for this event, good luck and safe riding to all!

El Gouna Kiteboarding Grand Slam - Day Six Featured

Day six saw a continuation of the previous placid wind conditions, and with little chance for competition most took the time to relax and pack their gear in preparation for the prize giving ceremony.

The ceremony was a great show with Lewis Crathern announcing the results to a crowd of riders, fans and Egyptian delegates. The top three riders for both Men and Women had a chance to speak on the microphone, with all giving unanimous praise to the organisers and the Egyptian government for supporting Kiteboarding and running a world class event.

The Egyptian government was no doubt impressed, with news announced at the ceremony of a Junior World Championship event now scheduled to take place in Egypt in July this year.

We would like to thank all riders, sponsors and fans for supporting this first event of the year and no doubt helping make it a great success! Thank you all!

El Gouna Kiteboarding Grand Slam – Day Five Featured

Day Five – Groundhog day! With almost no chance for wind today riders once again took the opportunity to explore Elgouna and it’s surroundings. For most that meant another leisurely day at the cable park or snorkeling on the reefs.

The forecast for tomorrow isn’t looking amazing, but we will stay optimistic in the hope that some late wind may materialize! If you know a good wind dance now’s the time!

El Gouna Kiteboarding Grand Slam – Day Four Featured

Day four was to be another lay day with calm conditions prevailing throughout the Red Sea zone. Many riders once again utilised the Sliders cable park whilst others took the opportunity to go on a once in a lifetime trip to the reef to meet with the Dolphins! If you’re in El Gouna this is definitely something you must experience, upwards of 50 dolphins often swimming so close around you that you can touch them isn’t an uncommon sight. This is a trip that most will remember for years to come!

The forecast for tomorrow still isn’t looking particularly good with very light winds prevailing once again. The forecast for the weekend shows especially windy conditions for Sunday, lets hope some of that wind moves forward a bit into Saturday for the Big Air competition!
